Although scientists have not come up with specific answers as to exactly why people need sleep, a number of studies have proven that chronic lack of sleep can increase a person’s risk for developing a number of serious medical conditions, among them diabetes, obesity and cardiovascular problems.
It is for this reason, perhaps, that memory foam mattresses have become a big success. Of course, who wouldn’t want to be free of all the aches and pains that we feel as soon as we wake up each morning? This new type of material ensures a good night’s sleep due to the fact that the foam follows the contours of the human body when in use, thus reducing pressure on a person’s back, shoulders and legs. Because the memory foam is now known to the public as the material used in creating some sort of “magic mattress” and is mainly being used in the bedding industry, it is surprising to know that it traces its origins back to NASA.
In the early 1970’s, NASA was in search of something to relieve astronauts of the g-forces that assault their body during lift-off. They figured that they needed a foam material that would hold the conformity of a person’s body shape but can also accommodate any movement that person makes. Hence, they invented a visco-elastic material which returns to its normal shape as soon as pressure is removed.
Enterprising businessmen soon rushed to find the perfect consumer use for this new product, and in 1991 Swedish mattress company Tempur-Pedic succeeded. They came out with the first line of memory foam mattress and introduced it in the Swedish market. The success of that launch led to a project expansion in North America and the rest, as they say, is history.
The material goes through quite a complicated process before the correct weight and density is achieved. Although it has been certified to be non-toxic, the foam can emit a certain smell that remains for about a couple of weeks after it is taken out of its packaging. If you are sensitive to strong odors, it would be best to air out the room for at least a couple of days. You can also try placing a dish of vinegar on your night stand.
Whatever the little inconveniences such as an unfamiliar odor, consumers are definitely reaping the rewards of the NASA researchers’ ingenuity and the Swedish company’s business acumen, as people are getting better quality of sleep from this magic mattress. As it is introduced to more and more markets and reaches global popularity, it is hoped that the memory foam mattress will deliver its promise of better sleep and better health.

Memory Foam: Not All Foams Are Created Equal
Posted by: | CommentsWe’ve all seen the ads, and the hype, about memory foam and other types of foam bedding products. But, how much of this is simply Brand Name positioning and attempts to capture the bedding market? And, when you throw in proprietary and patented formulations, well, that is what makes brand names and creates a lot of options.
Most synthetic bedding foams are basically polyurethane-based foams of either an open or closed cell structure, produced from and with the aid of, other chemicals. Proprietary brand name foams favorably adjust the qualities of the foam by adding specific agents, and both the formulation and the specifically created features become identified with the brand name. Of course, the owners of these patents jealously protect both their name and what it represents in terms of products and quality.
Although durable closed-cell polyurethane foam was apparently a German creation during wartime, open-cell or ‘memory’ foam was originally developed by NASA scientists in the United States. That original formulation was further improved upon, initially, by a Swedish company now known as Tempur-Pedic, which also patented their formulation. First used commercially as a medical aid for certain difficult cases, this company later spearheaded the retail sale of memory foam bedding to households around the world.
Nowadays, high quality memory foam is also manufactured by numerous reputable companies in the United States and around the world. And, with its broad appeal in the marketplace, it’s no wonder the Chinese have been working to take on the market by improving their products and offering them at prices American companies can’t match.
Taken as a class, all memory foams have certain common and very desirable features. Specifically, the ability to recover gradually from body impressions, and more ‘cradling’ and ‘cushioning’ of body contours. And, if you ever doubted that little bit of ’sinking into the foam’, be aware that the additional contact of the foam with more square inches of body surface results in greater distribution of body weight, and reduction of troublesome ‘pressure points’.
In terms of the ‘feel’ of one specific brand of foam, combined with its perceived support and hardness, this is the domain of specific brands and models of foam. US foam manufacturers such as Foamex and Carpenter actually manufacture a variety of foam types (models) in a range of densities, while for many years the Swedish brand held fast to their flagship formulation.
And, what about all the claims and testimonials to the benefits of sleeping on memory foam? While memory foam is a great thing and does help many people find better and more comfortable sleep, it is very important to understand that you really shouldn’t be expecting these products to solve all of your health and sleep issues. There are times when you should see a doctor, a chiropractor, or seek to address the actual cause of your particular issue from another angle. And, perhaps to do both at the same time!
If you happen to be one of those chemically sensitive individuals or an environmentalist, you might be more interested in natural (non-synthetic) foams such as Green Latex and Reflex Natural. Among other things, Natural or Green Latex is naturally hypoallergenic, anti-microbial, and dust and mite resistant. On the other hand, the term ‘Talalay Latex’, while it actually refers to the process for creating spongy latex foam, is frequently also used to refer to a hybrid blend of both natural and synthetic foams. I personally don’t like my bed that warm, but for those who don’t mind being snug as a bug in a rug, this shouldn’t bother you. Strobel does say however that there is no need to worry about heat build up, due to the open cell structure that breathes.

Other perks are that it is flame retardant and uses no chemical adhesives. If the bed gets wet you can separate and dry out the layers. This makes checking for mildew and mold easy. Cleansing for this organic mattress seems fairly easy aswell. It calls for you being able to vacuum and use upholstery cleaners. It comes with a 30 year warranty which is amazing to say the least since standard mattresses usually have a 15 year warranty. This organic foam mattress is also hypoallergenic which is perfect for us allergy sufferers, or those with asthma or other respiratory issues. The Supple-Pedic is also dust mite resistant so don’t worry about the bed bugs biting.
Now there are 3 memory foam thickness to choose from. The 3000 which is a 3 inch Polyfilax memory foam to give the conforming feel that is both soft and comfortable as well as offering firm support. The 4500 is 4.5 inches thick and is said to give more of the comfort and feel of the 3000. The 6000 for the 6 inch thick memory foam gives the 2nd highest level of comfort, soft yet firm support then the other two. And Lastly the 9000 which is the supreme of the four. My opinion is that there probably isn’t much difference between the 3000 and the 4500. So I would opt to choose between the 3000, 6000 and the 9000. Each come with a high quality Damask organic cotton mattress cover that is removable and cleanable.
My only minus really with this mattress is the warming effect that it may have. But overall this is a high quality organic mattress. Great for those with shoulder, back, and hip issues or anyone wanting spinal support and alignment while sleeping. Wonderful for the allergy sensitive and those with respiratory issues like asthma, etc. Eliminating tossing and turning is always a plus so it would be great for those who suffer from insomnia because of the comfort level and organic cover.
